Faucet Construction Anatomy: Body, Finish, Cartridge, Aerator and Connections

The five decision points inside every faucet quote

Two faucets can look identical on a rendering and behave completely differently after three years of service. The difference is decided in five places: the body alloy, the surface system, the cartridge, the aerator, and the connections. This guide takes a faucet apart, piece by piece, so that a buyer can specify each layer explicitly instead of buying a photograph.

1. The body: alloy and wall

Solid brass remains the contract standard. EMPOLO bodies cast from copper content above 59% — an alloy family that machines cleanly, resists corrosion from inside and out, and recycles completely. Zinc alloy copies are cheaper to buy once and expensive to own: they creep under hot water, crack at the shanks, and finish poorly when plating goes over a porous casting. Two questions separate the markets instantly: what is the alloy number, and where is the parting line? A good single-piece body casting shows its quality at the parting line. The wall thickness matters as much as the alloy — thin shanks strip when a plumber overtightens during installation, and stripped threads are the most common field failure on cheap imports.

2. The surface: plating systems, not colors

Chrome is a layered system — copper, semi-bright nickel, bright nickel, chrome — built on hand-polished brass. PVD (physical vapor deposition) colors such as brushed gold, rose gold, gun metal and matte black are bonded in vacuum chambers, which is why a proper PVD finish survives salt-spray and household chemicals far better than wet-painted color. The buying question is never the color name; it is the test report. Ask for salt-spray hours and adhesive/cross-cut results for the exact finish you are ordering. Our finishes include chrome, chrome black, matte black, brushed gold, brush champagne gold, rose gold and gun metal, validated in-house before a batch ships.

3. The cartridge: the part that decides the service interval

Inside the lever sits the ceramic disc cartridge. It meters temperature, meters volume, and switches nothing else — but it fails loudest. Import-grade faucets use 35mm or 40mm ceramic cartridges from established suppliers — our production lines fit Spanish Sedal and Naijie cartridges depending on the series — with a warranty claim path that a project owner can actually execute. Ask any supplier three cartridge questions: what brand, what size, and can your local distributor stock it in fifty-piece lots? A cartridge that can be bought in the destination market turns a component into a consumable, which is exactly what facility teams need it to be. Our faucet bodies carry a 5-year warranty and the ceramic cartridges 2 years.

4. The aerator: the invisible water bill

The aerator mixes air into the stream — softer splash, lower flow, quieter fill. For WELS and water-code markets the aerator is a registered component, chosen for the market before the unit is assembled. Laminar flow and water-saving aerators are also what let a designer specify a wide, glassy pour without wasting half a tank of hot water per guest. If your project must register for a green building label, the aerator spec is part of the submission.

5. The connections: where containers die

Stainless braided hoses, eccentric connectors, and the rough-in box all travel badly if they are specified as afterthoughts. Confirm thread standards for the destination market (NPT against BSP is the classic container-killer), confirm hose lengths against the vanity drawings, and confirm that the concealed boxes arrive with protective plugs. Every EMPOLO unit is pressure- and leak-tested at 100% before packing, and connections ship market-coded.
