Choosing Faucet Finishes: Chrome, Matte Black, Brushed Gold and PVD Explained

· EMPOLO buyer guide

Buyers choose finishes by looking. Projects keep finishes by specifying how the color is made and how it was tested. This guide covers what each common finish actually is, how it behaves after three years of guest use, and what to ask your manufacturer for before approving one.
Quality chrome is a layered electroplate — copper, semi-bright nickel, bright nickel, chromium — over hand-polished brass. It tolerates the most abuse per dollar, wipes clean of most hotel bathroom chemistry, and its weakness is cosmetic: water spots, which show more on chrome than on satin textures. Chrome is the default for volume floors precisely because nothing else is as forgiving. The specification to ask for: nickel thickness range and salt-spray hours for the plating spec, not "shiny gold-free chrome."
A true matte black faucet is PVD or a bonded industrial coating with adhesion testing. A cheap one is paint, and it fails at the lever grip first. In our program matte black sits on the same vacuum-coating line as the golds, validated by cross-cut adhesion and salt-spray before a color leaves the factory as a batch option. What matte black demands from users: no abrasive pads. The texture is the finish; sanding it changes it.
All three are PVD gold-range colors with a satin brush. Champagne gold (our brush champagne series) is warmer and pairs with cream stone; rose gold reads copper-pink and pairs with pale marble; classic brushed gold is the hotel-luxe staple. PVD's advantage over wet gold plating is depth and diffusion into the substrate — which is why it survives cleaning cycles that lift wet plating. Specify by salt-spray result and by the approved full-size sample under the actual lighting, and keep the sample at handover for reference.
Gun metal is a graphite-gold PVD with a metallic shimmer — darker than brushed gold, warmer than black, and the most forgiving dark finish against water spots. Chrome black is black chrome electroplate — glossier and harder than matte. For hard-water markets and unattended settings, the gun-metal range consistently photographs better year five.
Which means batch color consistency across reorders is a manufacturing property, not a hope — the same chemists mix the baths whether the order is sample-sized or container-sized. Every finish we quote — chrome, chrome black, matte black, brushed gold, brush champagne gold, rose gold, gun metal — has passed the same validation gate before it reaches your sample kit.
